Networking Doesn’t Have to Be Scary: Tips for Making the Most of Your Next PWC Event

Blog Post

Blog Post, June 2025

While networking is one of the core purposes and benefits of being part of PWC, let’s be real – it can also be one of the most intimidating aspects of joining a new organization. Walking into a room full of people you don’t know (yet!) can feel overwhelming, especially for those who are newer to the industry, introverted, neurodivergent, or from underrepresented backgrounds. But with a little prep and the right mindset, it can also be one of the most energizing and impactful parts of your professional journey.

Whether you’re heading to PWC’s next Member Connect or DEI Candid Convo, here are some of our favorite tips to help you feel confident, prepared, and ready to make meaningful connections:

1. Plan Your Route and Travel Logistics, A smooth arrival sets the tone for a great event.

  • Public Transportation: Check how often your bus or train runs and whether it stops close to the venue. Will you need to walk a bit? If so, wear comfortable shoes – you’ll thank yourself later!
  • Driving: Look into parking options ahead of time. Is it street parking, a garage, or valet? Paid or free? If the parking is a few blocks from the event, comfy footwear is still your best friend.

If you have any mobility needs or require accommodations, check in with the event organizers ahead of time. PWC is committed to making events inclusive and accessible for all members.

2. Choose the Right Bag or Purse, You don’t want to be juggling too many things when networking.

  • Go hands-free: Opt for a smaller bag or crossbody that holds your essentials – phone, keys, and a few business cards – while keeping your hands free for handshakes, holding a drink, or sampling appetizers!
  • Coat/Bags: Most PWC events offer a coat or bag check, but if there isn’t one, make sure whatever you’re carrying is lightweight and easy to manage.

3. Set a Personal Goal for the Event, Why are you attending this event? Being intentional helps you get more out of your experience.

  • Looking for business opportunities? Think about the types of companies or industries you want to connect with. Do a little research in advance if you can!
  • Exploring new job possibilities? Stay open! You never know what kind of company or role may spark your interest.
  • Just here to meet people and expand your circle? Great! Be yourself, enjoy the moment, and see where the conversations take you.

4. Make Approaching Strangers Easier, Yes, you can do this – and it’s easier than you think.

  • Have a quick intro ready (your “elevator pitch”) Share who you are, what you do, and why you’re at the event. Tailor it to the person or group you’re talking to.
  • Use easy icebreakers:

“How long have you been part of PWC?”

“This is my first time at this venue. Have you been here before?”

“Hi, I don’t think we’ve met yet – my name is ___!”

“I haven’t heard of your company before – what do you do?”

  • Not sure who to approach? Try these spots:

The bar: People are usually waiting, which makes it the perfect time to strike up a chat.

Odd-numbered groups: If there’s a group of 3 or 5, someone may be standing slightly outside the main conversation – this is a great way in.

5. Leave a Lasting Impression, You don’t have to be extroverted or high-energy – just intentional.

  • Wardrobe flair: A fun blazer, statement jewelry, or bold shoes can be a great conversation starter and a way to express your personality.
  • Business cards that pop: Consider a memorable design or something modern like a LinkedIn QR code or NFC-enabled card – they’re quick, tech-savvy, and super convenient.
  • Follow up: After the event, connect with new contacts on LinkedIn or shoot them a quick follow-up note. A little post-event touchpoint can go a long way!

Reminder, you don’t have to meet everyone in the room – just a few genuine connections can make a huge difference. Be yourself, stay curious, and remember: everyone is there to meet new people, just like you!

We’ll see you at the next event!
