Geology of Chicago, Industry in Focus Professional Development
Friday, September 12, 2025 (11:00 AM - 12:15 PM) (CDT)
Description
The world-famous Chicago skyline didn't just happen - it is rooted in unique geologic conditions that make our city a birthplace of skyscrapers. From the soil underfoot to the foundations that hold up 110 N Wacker, Chicago's geology is as much a part of its architecture as steel and glass.
A critical aspect of any project is making sure the foundation is designed suitably for the underlying soils. Regardless of your project, or your role in a project, this session will help you develop a better understanding of the underground factors that influence building construction and a deeper appreciation for the engineering professionals that make the Chicago Skyline possible.
Join Darren Diehm of GEI Consultants as he shares his expertise in the basics of Foundation Design to give attendees an understanding of the geotechnical conditions that support, and the history of, our world-famous Chicago Skyline.
This 75-minute presentation will engage discussion of the geologic processes under which the land was formed, offer a brief history of the evolution of skyscrapers, and examine systems that support these structures. Attendees will be given opportunities to ask questions as they deepen their understanding of the conditions that allowed Chicago to be the birthplace of the skyscraper.
Attend this session if you are interested in learning more about the engineering of the built environment, and the geology that supports the Chicago Skyline. All levels and experience are welcome. Some knowledge of architecture or building engineering and construction is encouraged, but not required. This event is for PWC Chicago Members only, and attendees must be registered in order to participate.
Registration closes on 9/5.
In-person attendance encouraged. Capped at 20 members.
This is a PWC Member-Only event– it’s easy to join today!
